Wy buying a house in Algarve?

Algarve has one of the best climates of the world.  Due to the proximity of Tropic of Cancer  it has a climate influenced by the Mediterranean sea and, because of its location in the Atlantic, does not suffer, like other Mediterranean regions, of intolerable Summer heat, neither freezing cold winds coming from Eastern Europe in Winter.   Algarve, with maximum temperatures in Winter between 15 and 20º C  and in Summer between 27 and 30º C it is a region we can say “never too cold, never too hot”.  The variation of seasons is enough for us to not get bored with always the same weather. Seldom has it rained a full day. If it rains at morning will not in the afternoon and vice versa. Snow, is a such rare phenomenon that, when it happens, in the heights of Monchique hills, the roads get jammed because everybody wants to see it.

Albufeira beach

Algarve is  synonymous of beaches to the majority of people.  Even though it has a short coast of around 250 kms, it is full of small coves and bays, hidden beaches among the cliffs, or large extensions of sand either on Barlavento (West side) or Sotavento (East side). However, you should take some time to visit the Barrocal  (Foothill) and the Algarvian hills (Serras), where you still can find small villages with their charming old feeling, the almond trees, carob trees and small vineyards. The smell of the rock-roses (Cistus ladeniferus) and lavender are permanent.  From January to May or June, the fields are covered of flowers contrasting a background of fantastic blue skies.  Many tourists already found it and there are many organized tours, either walking, on bikes or 4 wheel drive.

Despite Algarve being a tourist area, not all goods are over marked. You will find out that in many goods, prices are lower than home and services are much cheaper. There are restaurants for every wallet and of course, the locals know very well where to go to eat good and cheap.  Be brave and go beyond the burgers, pizzas and fish & chips. However, if you miss the big city razzmatazz, you have Lisbon and Seville at less than 3 hours drive. In technical terms, despite being on the SW extreme of Europe,  we are close to everything. The international Faro airport with direct flights to most capitals of Europe, allow you to be in 3 hours or less in most countries of Europe. Internet at 4 or 8 Mb is everywhere, telephones are efficient, and we are one of the countries with more mobile phones of Europe. We also have a good network of roads and motorways.

Algarve orchestra

Geographically, being in where ever you’ll be in Algarve,  you are not far away of accessing any facility of the big cities. Shopping malls, cinemas and theatres where you can assist concerts or opera, nothing is missing if you get tired of laying down under the sun.  By the way, we have also our Algarve Symphonic Orchestra  with many international musicians.  I am not going to talk about our restaurants (some referred by the Michelin Guide), bars, pubs and cafés where you can enjoy a coffee outside reading the news on the day paper of your country.

Your health is also assured. Beside the traditional local Health Centres, Algarve has two major public hospitals and a central one planned to be built in the outskirts of Faro. Several private hospitals are around with protocols with insurance companies.

Without factories to pollute the air, pollution is almost inexistent in Algarve. Our cities are mostly clean.  What a better place to find out your holiday home? And when you retire, what a better location can you have to live? With so many English speaking ex-pats living here permanently, you will fit in wonderfully. The only thing you can complain is your children and friends, insisting in coming over to visit you.

The only things, we indeed do not have, are the unbearable heat waves in summer, happening in countries like Spain or Greece, hurricanes and cyclones during summer in Florida or Mexico, or the violence of South America..
